An iPhone camera saves photos as HEIC unless you switch Settings, Camera, Formats to Most Compatible. HEIC files are smaller than a JPG of the same quality, but Chrome, Firefox and Windows usually cannot open them. Tested on a real image
To test the HEIC path end to end, I made a hallway notice, tilted it, darkened the corners and converted it to a real .heic file with the macOS sips tool, the same image format iPhones save by default. I uploaded the .heic file itself, which the tool converts to JPEG in the browser before reading. OCR language: Auto.

- The .heic file opened and converted with no extra step, and the whole paragraph came back word for word, times, floor number and extension included.
- One error: the bold heading "Hallway Bulletin" came back as "Hal: ay Bulletin". Bold display text at the top of a tilted photo was also the weak spot in the homepage sample, so check headings first.
- About 1% of the characters were wrong. HEIC itself does not make OCR better or worse; the photo does. If an iPhone photo reads badly, the fix is the same as for a JPEG: get closer, hold still and avoid shadows.
