What makes Bengali hard for OCR

Bengali letters hang from a top line (the matra), vowel signs sit before, after, above or below the consonant, and two or three consonants often merge into one joined shape. The OCR has to recognise each of those shapes and put the Unicode characters back in the right order.

  • Conjuncts (juktakkhor). Common joined letters such as ক্ষ ন্ত স্ত are read well in clean print. Rare or three letter conjuncts, and the different ways old and new fonts draw them, are where most errors come from.
  • Print. Clear printed Bangla, from screenshots, websites, textbooks and typed documents, reads well. Old books, cheap newsprint and decorative fonts give more broken conjuncts and missing vowel signs.
  • Handwriting. Not really. The Bengali model is trained on printed fonts, so handwritten notes and forms filled in by hand give a rough guess at best.

The result is Unicode text, not the older Bijoy (SutonnyMJ) encoding, so it pastes correctly into Word, Google Docs and chats with any Unicode Bangla font. If you need Bijoy for an old workflow, convert the text afterwards with a Unicode to Bijoy converter. The same model also reads Assamese print reasonably, though it does not know Assamese spelling.

How to extract Bengali text from an image

Three steps, no account. Bengali is already selected in the language box.

Last updated:

  1. 1

    1. Add the image

Drop a JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, WebP, TIFF, HEIC, HEIF, HEICS file up to 10 MB, paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V or load it from a link. Crop away anything that is not text.

  2. 2

    2. Extract the text

Click Extract text. The image is straightened and cleaned up, then read with the Bengali model on your device. The first run downloads the model once.

  3. 3

    3. Check and copy

Fix broken conjuncts and vowel signs in the box, then copy the text or download it as .txt or .docx.

Tips for better Bengali results

Before you extract

  • Keep Bengali selected rather than Auto, so the Bengali model is used from the first try
  • Get close: conjuncts and small vowel signs need each letter to be clearly readable
  • For old or yellowed print, tick Black and white under the language box and extract again
  • Photograph one column at a time, straight on, without shadows across the page

Mixed text

  • Bangla with English words? Click Add a language and pick English, so both are read in one run
  • You can combine up to 3 languages in one run
  • Text that is mostly English with a few Bangla words reads better with English first and Bengali added
  • Several pages? Multi Image OCR reads up to 20 images in one batch

What people use it for

Our image to text converter is designed to streamline the process of extracting text from images. However, we understand you might have a few questions. To make the most of this tool, we've compiled some frequently asked questions along with helpful explanations to guide you.

Does it read conjunct letters (juktakkhor) correctly?

Common conjuncts in clear print, yes. Rare ones, conjuncts in old or decorative fonts and anything in a blurry photo are where errors come from: a conjunct can come out as two separate letters or a different joined letter. Check them when you proofread.

Can it read handwritten Bengali?

Not reliably. The model is trained on printed Bangla, so handwriting gives a rough guess at best, even when it is neat. See handwritten to text for what helps with handwriting in general.

Is the result Unicode or Bijoy?

Unicode. It pastes correctly anywhere that supports Unicode Bangla. If you need the text in Bijoy (for SutonnyMJ and similar fonts), run it through a Unicode to Bijoy converter afterwards.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The Bengali model is downloaded to your browser and the image is read on your device, so documents and private chats stay with you.
