What is document OCR?
Document OCR turns a photo or scan of a page into editable text. Upload an image of a letter, form, receipt or book page, choose the text language, and QuickImageToText extracts the words in your browser.
Which languages can it read?
It reads 19 languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Ukrainian, Turkish, Arabic, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Japanese, Korean, Urdu, Persian, Hindi, Bengali, Thai. Pick the language of the document before you extract; the right choice noticeably improves the result.
Can I upload a PDF here?
This page reads images of documents. For PDF files, use the PDF to Text tool: it reads the PDF's own text layer and uses OCR for scanned pages.
How do I get the best results from a scan or phone photo?
Most errors come from the photo, not the text. Before you upload:
- Photograph the page flat and straight, in even light without shadows.
- Scan at 300 DPI or more when you use a scanner.
- Crop away the background and anything that is not text.
- Choose the language the document is written in.
Are my documents uploaded to a server?
No. OCR runs in your browser with Tesseract.js, so the image stays on your device. Only the OCR engine and the language data are downloaded to your browser.
