Korean Image to Text

Get editable Korean text from a photo, scan or screenshot. The tool opens with Korean selected, keeps the spaces between words, and reads the image in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

What to expect with Korean text

Korean is written in Hangul, where letters are grouped into square syllable blocks: 한 is ㅎ, ㅏ and ㄴ in one block. The OCR reads whole blocks, and unlike Chinese and Japanese, Korean puts spaces between words, so the result keeps them.

  • Hangul. Printed horizontal text from apps, websites and documents reads well. Blocks that differ by one small stroke (은 / 운, 이 / 미) are where errors show up in small or blurry text.
  • Mixed English. This is the weak spot. With Korean alone, English words and brand names come out as wrong letters. Adding English as a second language fixes most of them, but can turn a few short Korean words into Latin letters and add spaces between syllables, so check both and expect to correct some words either way.
  • Hanja and vertical text. Occasional Chinese characters (hanja) in older or legal texts are often misread; add Chinese (Traditional) if a page has many. Vertical text is not supported, but modern Korean is almost always horizontal.

Word spacing comes from the gaps in the image, so very tight or very loose spacing in the original can join or split words. Check spacing when you proofread.

How to extract Korean text from an image

Three steps, no account. Korean is already selected in the language box.

  1. 1

    1. Add the image

Drop a JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, WebP, TIFF, HEIC, HEIF, HEICS file up to 10 MB, paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V or load it from a link. Crop away anything that is not text.

  2. 2

    2. Extract the text

Click Extract text. If the image mixes in many English words, try again with English added and keep the better result. The image is read with the Korean model on your device. The first run downloads the model once.

  3. 3

    3. Check and copy

Fix misread blocks and spacing in the box, then copy the text or download it as .txt or .docx.

Tips for better Korean results

Before you extract

  • Keep Korean selected rather than Auto, so the Korean model is used from the first try
  • Get close enough that each syllable block is clearly readable
  • Crop out logos and stylised headings; decorative Hangul fonts are read badly
  • For faded print, tick Black and white under the language box and extract again

Mixed text

  • Lots of English words? Click Add a language, pick English, and compare with the Korean only result
  • You can combine up to 3 languages, for example Korean, English and Chinese (Traditional) for hanja
  • Text that is mostly English with a few Korean words: put English first and add Korean
  • Several pages? Multi Image OCR reads up to 20 images in one batch

What people use it for

Our image to text converter is designed to streamline the process of extracting text from images. However, we understand you might have a few questions. To make the most of this tool, we've compiled some frequently asked questions along with helpful explanations to guide you.

Why are English words in my result garbled?

With Korean alone, the engine tries to read every word as Hangul, so English words and brand names come out as wrong letters. Click Add a language, pick English and extract again: most English words then come out right, but a few Korean words can turn into Latin letters. Keep whichever result needs fewer fixes.

Does it keep the spaces between Korean words?

Yes. Korean uses spaces between words, and the OCR keeps them based on the gaps in the image. Unusual spacing in the original can still join or split a word, so check it when you proofread.

Can it read handwritten Korean?

Only very neat, print style handwriting has a chance, and most words will need fixing. The model is trained on printed fonts. See handwritten to text for what helps with handwriting in general.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The Korean model is downloaded to your browser and the image is read on your device, so private chats and documents stay with you.
