How Devanagari affects OCR

Hindi is written left to right in Devanagari. Letters hang from a horizontal line across the top of each word (the shirorekha), vowel signs (matras) sit above, below, before or after a consonant, and consonants combine into conjuncts such as क्ष त्र ज्ञ. The OCR has to read each word as a cluster, not a row of separate letters.

What this means in practice:

  • Small marks matter. The anusvara (ं), chandrabindu (ँ) and nukta (़) are tiny dots. Blur or a low resolution photo drops them first, so check words like हैं and ज़रूरत.
  • Conjuncts. Common printed conjuncts are read well. Rare ones and stacked forms in older fonts are more often split or misread.
  • Legacy fonts. The output is always Unicode Hindi. That is what you want for Word, search and chat, but it is not the old Kruti Dev or similar font encoding some offices still use.
  • Other Devanagari languages. Marathi, Nepali and Sanskrit share the script. The Hindi model often reads them reasonably, but it does not know their vocabulary, so expect more errors.

Check the result before you use it: a missing matra changes the word, and a spell checker for Hindi in Word or Google Docs catches many of these.

How to extract Hindi text from an image

Three steps, no account. Hindi is already selected in the language box.

  1. 1

    1. Add the image

Drop a JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, WebP, TIFF, HEIC, HEIF, HEICS file up to 10 MB, paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V or load it from a link. Crop away anything that is not text.

  2. 2

    2. Extract the text

Click Extract text. The image is straightened and cleaned up, then read with the Hindi model on your device. The first run downloads the model once.

  3. 3

    3. Check and copy

Fix missing matras and dots in the box, then copy the text or download it as .txt or .docx.

Tips for better Hindi results

Before you extract

  • Keep Hindi selected rather than Auto: Auto recognises Devanagari but you save a detection step
  • For old, yellowed or cheap newsprint, tick Black and white under the language box and extract again
  • Get close enough that matras and dots are clearly visible
  • Use the original photo, not a WhatsApp copy, which is often recompressed

Mixed text

  • Hindi with English words? Click Add a language and pick English, so both scripts are read in one run
  • Hindi with Urdu, or a bilingual form? Add Urdu as well; you can combine up to 3 languages
  • Hinglish (Hindi written in Latin letters) is plain English to the OCR: pick English for it
  • Several pages? Multi Image OCR reads up to 20 images in one batch

What people use it for

Our image to text converter is designed to streamline the process of extracting text from images. However, we understand you might have a few questions. To make the most of this tool, we've compiled some frequently asked questions along with helpful explanations to guide you.

Will the text work in Word and WhatsApp?

Yes. The output is Unicode Devanagari, which Word, Google Docs, WhatsApp and every modern phone display without special fonts. It will not paste correctly into a document that uses a legacy font like Kruti Dev.

Why are some matras or dots missing?

They are the smallest marks on the page, so blur, low resolution and faint print lose them first. Take the photo closer, in good light, and try the Black and white option. Then check words with ं, ँ and ़.

Can it read handwritten Hindi?

Only neat, clearly separated handwriting gives a usable result, and it will need correcting. The model is trained on printed text. See handwritten to text for tips.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The Hindi model is downloaded to your browser and the image is read on your device, so forms and private messages stay with you.
