How to Extract Text From a Screenshot
To extract text from a screenshot, take the screenshot to your clipboard, paste it into an OCR tool such as Image to Text, and copy the recognized text. There is no need to save the file first: the tool accepts a pasted image directly.
Why can't you just select text in a screenshot?
A screenshot is a picture of the screen, not the text itself. The letters are pixels, so you need OCR (optical character recognition) to turn them back into characters you can select, edit and search. That is why text from an error dialog, a video frame or a locked web page has to be read, not copied.
How do you take a screenshot straight to the clipboard?
| Device | Shortcut | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Win + Shift + S, then select an area | Clipboard |
| Mac | Cmd + Ctrl + Shift + 4, then select an area | Clipboard |
| iPhone | Side button + Volume up | Photos |
| Android | Power + Volume down | Gallery or Photos |
On phones the screenshot is saved as an image file, which you can upload instead of pasting.

Does it work with dark mode screenshots?
Usually yes, but light text on a dark background is read less reliably than dark text on white. If a dark screenshot comes back with errors, switch the app to light mode for a moment and capture again.
Can you do this without any website?
Yes. Windows 11 has Text actions in the Snipping Tool, Macs and iPhones have Live Text, and Android has Google Lens. Our guide on copying text from an image on any device covers each one. A browser tool helps when you are on a shared computer, need the whole text in one box, or want one of 14 OCR languages.
Paste your screenshot
Capture, paste, copy. The image never leaves your browser.
