What changes when a GIF becomes a WebP

Last updated:

Read this first: the result is a still image, not an animation. The browser draws the GIF onto a canvas, and a canvas only holds one picture, which for an animated GIF is its first frame. That frame is saved as WebP. Files up to 10 MB, nothing uploaded.

Animation
Dropped. An animated GIF with fifty frames becomes one WebP of the first frame. If you need animated WebP, use a desktop tool that re encodes frame by frame; this one does not.
Transparency
Kept. A GIF with a transparent color keeps those pixels transparent in the WebP.
Hidden frames
Some GIFs build each frame on top of the previous one and leave the first frame nearly empty. Those give a mostly blank or partial still, because later frames are never drawn.
Quality
Fixed at 0.92, which gives lossy WebP. GIF frames are usually small and simple, so the difference is hard to see, but hard pixel edges in pixel art can soften slightly.
Size in pixels
Unchanged. The WebP has the same width and height as the GIF, so small pixel art stays small. Scaling it up afterwards in an editor with nearest neighbor resizing keeps the hard pixel edges sharp.
Colors
The GIF already had at most 256 colors. WebP can store millions, but it cannot bring back colors the GIF never had, so banding stays.
File size
Much smaller than an animated GIF, mainly because the other frames are gone. For a still GIF, WebP is usually still smaller.
When to use it
You want a lightweight still image from a GIF: a thumbnail, a poster frame, or a still GIF you want to publish in a modern format. Use Chrome, Edge or Firefox, which can write WebP from a canvas.

Animation, frames and transparency, answered for GIF to WebP.

Will my animated GIF stay animated?

No. The converter saves only the first frame as a still WebP.

Which frame do I get?

The first frame, or the default frame if the file marks one. Later frames are not read.

Is transparency kept?

Yes. Transparent pixels in the GIF stay transparent in the WebP.
