What changes when a PNG becomes a JPG

The PNG is drawn onto a canvas in your browser at its original size and encoded as JPEG. Nothing is uploaded, and the limit is 10 MB per file.
- Transparency
- JPEG has no transparency, and the converter does not add a background color first. Transparent areas therefore come out black. I tested this in Chrome with a half transparent test image: the empty half was black in the JPG. If your PNG has a transparent background, place it on white in an editor first, or use PNG to WebP instead.
- Quality
- Fixed at 0.92, no slider. That is a high setting: photos look the same at normal zoom. Text, line art and screenshots show faint smudges (JPEG artifacts) around sharp edges.
- Animation
- An animated PNG becomes one still frame.
- Metadata
- Text stored inside the PNG (author, software, comments) and any embedded color profile are not copied into the JPG. The pixels are what you see in the browser, saved without extra data.
- Colors
- JPEG keeps full color photos well. Flat areas of one color can pick up slight noise near edges, and 16 bit PNGs are reduced to 8 bits per channel.
- File size
- Much smaller for photos saved as PNG, often several times. For a simple screenshot or a diagram with few colors the JPG can end up the same size or even larger, with worse edges.
- When to use it
- A form, website or email asks for JPG only, or you saved a photo as PNG and it is too big to send. For screenshots of text, keep PNG.

Why did the transparent part turn black?
JPEG cannot store transparency, and the converter encodes the transparent pixels as they are, which JPEG writes as black. Add a white background to the PNG in an editor before converting.
Can I lower the quality to get a smaller file?
Not here. The quality is fixed at 0.92. For a smaller file, resize the image first or try PNG to WebP.
Does it keep the image dimensions?
Yes. The JPG has exactly the same width and height in pixels as the PNG.
