What changes when a PNG becomes a WebP

Last updated:

Your browser decodes the PNG, draws it onto a canvas at its original width and height, and asks its own WebP encoder for a file. Nothing is sent to a server, and the file can be up to 10 MB.

Transparency
Kept. WebP has an alpha channel, so a logo or icon with a see through background stays see through. I checked this in Chrome: a fully transparent pixel in the PNG is still fully transparent in the WebP.
Quality
The converter asks for quality 0.92 (92 on the usual 0 to 100 scale), and there is no slider. That is lossy WebP, not lossless. On photos you will not see a difference; on flat graphics with sharp edges, zoom in and check the edges before you replace the original.
Animation
PNG has no animation the converter reads. An animated PNG (APNG) comes out as one still frame.
Colors
PNG can store 16 bits per channel; the canvas works in 8 bits, so very high bit depth PNGs from design or scientific tools lose that extra precision. Ordinary PNGs from screenshots and exports are 8 bit already.
File size
Usually smaller, often by a lot for photo like PNGs. A tiny icon or a PNG that was already heavily optimized can come out about the same size. Compare the two numbers before you swap files on a website.
When to use it
You publish images on a website and want lighter pages, and every browser your visitors use shows WebP. Keep the PNG as your master copy for editing.
Browser note
The WebP is written by your browser. Chrome, Edge and Firefox can encode WebP from a canvas. A browser that cannot hands back PNG data instead, which would still carry the .webp name, so use one of those three.

Lossless output, transparency and file size, answered for PNG to WebP.

Can I make a lossless WebP here?

No. The quality is fixed at 0.92, which gives lossy WebP. For pixel exact output, keep the PNG or use a desktop encoder with a lossless option.

Will my transparent background survive?

Yes. WebP stores transparency, and the converter keeps the alpha channel from the PNG.

Why is my WebP not smaller than the PNG?

Small icons and PNGs that were already optimized leave little to save. Lossy WebP helps most on large images with photos, gradients or textures.
