What changes when a WebP becomes a PNG

Last updated:

The WebP is decoded by your browser, drawn on a canvas at its original size and saved as a lossless PNG. Up to 10 MB, processed on your device.

Transparency
Kept. Both formats store an alpha channel, so a WebP sticker or logo with a clear background stays clear in the PNG.
Quality
PNG output has no quality setting. If the WebP was lossy, its softness is copied as it is; nothing new is lost.
Animation
Not kept. An animated WebP becomes a single still PNG of the first frame (or the frame the file marks as its default). For a moving result you need a tool that writes animated PNG or GIF frame by frame.
Colors
Kept at 8 bits per channel, which is what WebP stores anyway.
Metadata
Any EXIF or XMP data stored in the WebP is not copied. The PNG holds the pixels and the transparency, nothing else.
Size in pixels
The PNG has exactly the width and height of the WebP. Nothing is resized or cropped, so a 1200 by 800 WebP gives a 1200 by 800 PNG. If you only need a smaller copy, resize it after converting, since a smaller PNG is also a much lighter file.
File size
Usually larger, because lossy WebP is compact and PNG is lossless. For a photo it is often a few times larger; flat graphics grow less.
When to use it
An older program, a print shop, or an upload form will not open WebP. Images saved from websites are often WebP even when the page looked like a normal photo, and PNG opens everywhere.

Animation, transparency and saved web images, answered for WebP to PNG.

Does it work with animated WebP?

Only partly. You get one still PNG from the first frame; the animation is dropped.

Is the transparency kept?

Yes. PNG supports transparency, and the alpha channel from the WebP is copied over.

Why did a website image save as WebP?

Many sites serve WebP to browsers that support it because it is smaller. Converting to PNG gives you a file that older software can open.
